actual VS data-importer

There is some experimental work being done with SimpleFIN integration[1] for US banks but I can't comment on how well that works.

Personally, I add each transaction manually. It allows me to stay on top my budget.

But several months ago I went back to check out Actual budget which was a sort of YNAB-clone whose author decided to release as open source. If you are comfortable with a bit of command line work, you can install it easily enough running as a hosted service in the free tier of a provider. I'm running in fly.io (docs for that are here). It was a bit fiddly trying to get set up for the first time, but the docs are detailed, and since I got it working it's been flawless and easy.

theres some third parties that give you an API directly I believe. Firefly III lists salt edge and nordigen.

Firefly III is missing plenty of features (see below). I started Firefly III with a single user (me) and everything else is a bonus.

It can connect to your bank via Salt Edge if it is supported. Here is the documentation on the data importer - https://docs.firefly-iii.org/data-importer/

for auto-sync you need https://docs.firefly-iii.org/data-importer with API from Salt Edge or Nordingen.

You can easily import data into Firefly III using their data importer[0] and Nordigen API or Spectre (usage is explained in [0]). Doing so automatically is just a matter of running a cron job
