YoutubeDL-Material VS youtube-dl

I've had a look at youtubedl-material, and it hasn't been updated for a while. is there anything else? Can someone confirm it does everything youtube-dl cli does?

I self-host an instance of YoutubeDL-Material and it works great most of the time. Nice frontend UI for youtube-dl.

I've been using https://github.com/Tzahi12345/YoutubeDL-Material. Seems to work pretty well.

I was wondering why my youtubedl-material instance had been broken for a while now. It just refused to download anything for the longest time. Good to know it wasn't me.

youtube-dl material is what i use and has a web GUI

So I've just recently started adding YouTube content to my NAS so I'm not sure how helpful this will be but here goes. I'm using Tzahi12345 / YoutubeDL-Material in Docker. It downloads the video from a URL or playlist and places it in the designated folder that Ive added to plex as a library. The title of the video (and field) is populated in plex. The title does not have the youtube channel in plex but not a big deal to me. In youtubeDL-Material it looks like [this]9https://i.imgur.com/oEGLIdJ.png) In plex it looks like this

YoutubeDL-Material you can set it to yt-dlp and can even pass custom arguments if you want.

I see. According to the Web Archive, this website stopped working all the way in November 2023, and http://ytdl-org.github.io/youtube-dl/ now contains all the same content as the old one and is the new "official" website.

youtube-dl is still a thing, last commit was one week ago.

See elsewhere in the thread for details, but youtube-dl was restored by Github and is generally not considered to be in violation of the DMCA. You can see it on Github here: https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl

A copyright holder abused the DMCA process to take it down the first time.

The best way is to download the source from github, run `make`, and copy the the file to $HOME/bin . There hasn't been a release for about a year now and the files on the distro repos are even older (I think).

Also YouTube has been doing some changes lately on the the player and a lot of the tools fail to download audio or video.

No, they don't. yt-dlp is a fork - if something break, they can just fix it in their own codebase without needing to go through yt-dl. yt-dl is still somewhat active, but almost all their commits are backports of fixes from yt-dlp[0].

But this is still an infuriating move. youtube-dl wasn't doing anything infringing on its site, was it?

It's laughable how symbolic and ultimately meaningless this is. GitHub had already proven themselves to be a good actor in this particular fight, so not only is the repo online, but we also have http://ytdl-org.github.io/youtube-dl/

The Uberspace provider is appealing the decision as well. Even with the site down, this looks incredibly positive from where I sit.
