I recently found the Voice Audiobook Player for Android on the google play store[1][2]. Point it to a folder and it looks in there for audiobooks, one per subfolder, and keeps track of which ones you've read and where you are in each one.

No signup, no ads (albeit maybe analytics and crash telemetry), GPL3 code, fairly minimal and keeps audiobooks away from messing up music playlists or from podcast app complexity. Haven't used it enough to give a full review, but it seems exactly what I wanted and good for Libribox book downloads.

I'm not affiliated with this project but it's really nice for playing your audio books if you've liberated them. Has a nice interface and is used as an experimental platform for new Android technologies. Just wanted to give it a shout-out if anyone is looking for an alternative audio player.

There are a lot of YouTube videos that don't need visuals and work just fine as audio. On Android, I use NewPipe to download YouTube videos as audio, and then Voice to listen to it as an audiobook so that I get the same playback controls and playback speed adjustment as if it were a podcast. I added my NewPipe download folder as audiobook folder in Voice, so it automatically picks up new stuff that I download.

If Voice is 90% of the way to the app you need, and it sounds like it might be, there's no harm in dropping a feature request on GitHub. I've had great luck working with open source developers in the past, and most are eager to implement new features that would make their app more attractive. You can create an issue about books in subfolders getting merged as a bug while you're at it.

    Yes.

But as a result, my appreciation for "slow" reading had increased dramatically, where before it was a frustration.

    both have they're place.
