State of the surge package (+idea for the package pages)
The surge package is in fact not out-of-date. Version 1.9.0 is the last/latest version of surge. On a somewhat similar post I answered with this which might fit your question to some extent as well.

Prog or Power Metal style Synth VST?
As far as free. Any soundfont is pretty much better than a 1990s rompler. Perhaps check out Spitfire Audio Free Labs for some rompler styled stuff. Vital Synth is about the best new gen wavetable synth and has a free version. Surge Synth is a great free VA synth.
- My copy of Hal Chamberlin’s Legendary Tome “Musical Applications of Microprocessors” + AFAIK First published implementation of practical DSP synth filter in BASIC.

Questions from a beginner
tl;dr: My recommendation to you would be to pick a different synth - software's fine, like the amazing Surge - to first get a grip on what the parameter names even mean and how they affect the sound. Then, you can try to make a translation between those terms and Korg's own nomenclature.
