how do i download the unverum for the mods

There’s this link that has a download link at the top that isn’t github. Then as to actually using GitHub if you want to know for future use, I think it should be at the bottom underneath assets generally with the name of whatever you’re downloading rather than the source code files. Here’s a picture I took. Then here’s the GitHub link. Lastly there’s this video which goes through the process really fast
Thinking about making an open source mod manager for Linux?

I've been meaning to look into Unverum. It's open source already, but it's windows-specific. It does work in Linux via Wine, but only barely functions. Was a huge pain to get it running, and it crashes frequently, uses tons of CPU..
Just finished downloading from Steam... today will be my first time playing the game!!!

If you want to install mods I recommend using the CKAN mod manager. Modding manually is fairly simple if you prefer (just drag mods into GameData folder) but CKAN makes it easier to keep them updated, and it will add any dependencies or track conflicts between mods.

There are countless tutorials on how to install mods online. Otherwise try using CKAN (https://github.com/KSP-CKAN/CKAN/releases), it basically installs mods for you.

Install some visual mods (Parallax, EVE Redux, Planetshine, Distant Object Enhancment etc..) This will lead to a more immersive experience. Download CKAN and the mods from there. https://github.com/KSP-CKAN/CKAN/releases
I give up; I'll venmo someone $10 to install my mods correctly (screenshots included)

Use CKAN, it's essentially a mod hub/browser that manages downloading and installing mods as well, install instructions for each OS are in the link.

The best mod manager I have ever used is ckan, consider extending it to cover other games. At the very least take a poke around at how it works and steal some ideas from it.

CKan is a mod downloader. You search the mod and it will install the dependencies automatically (makes modding MUCH easier) Here is a tutorial.
my first playthrough ever. what mods should I consider?

The mod manager of choice for many people is CKAN. Almost every mod you'd want is on there either officially or compiled by someone else. Allows for installing and updating mods, filtering by game version and so on. Also lets you launch KSP straight from the client (which is why my Steam hours count is a couple thousand below where it should be!).
What are some alternatives?
Benjee10_MMSEV - Planetside Exploration Vehicle, a mod for Kerbal Space Program implementing a NASA MMSEV-style vehicle.
RP-0 - Realistic Progression Zero/One - Career mode for Realism Overhaul
ModBuddy - Mod buddy is a mod manager created with extensibility in mind
TweakScale - TweakScale lets you change the size of a part. Check also the https://github.com/net-lisias-ksp/TweakScaleCompanion where support for third-parties is being added!
steamtinkerlaunch - Linux wrapper tool for use with the Steam client for custom launch options and 3rd party programs
CKAN-meta - Metadata files for the CKAN
NetKAN - Metadata files used by the NetKAN/CKAN indexer
loot - A load order optimisation tool for the Elder Scrolls (Morrowind and later) and Fallout (3 and later) games.
