How do devs handle the math of levels/upgrades scaling upwards?
And many(most?) don't. In fact, many, games, even have, their repos available under permissive license that you can use for your own work.

Universal Paperclips
I once got quite into https://www.swarmsim.com/#/
It's about as barebones as you can get - it's literally just "numbers go up" with a few simple names attached to them. It turns out that even that is enough to get me addicted for a bit.

I'm stepping down from moderating /r/swarmsim
Also, my latest update to www.swarmsim.com (v1.1.16) removes all links to this subreddit. Swarmsim: Evolution is unchanged.

Games like trimps please
One of the best incremental games I played and have very good memories of it is: Swarm Simulator https://www.swarmsim.com/ Highly recommend!

Swarm Sim Remake
They probably won't mind much as original code is licensed freely - https://github.com/swarmsim/swarm/blob/master/LICENSE ... Though with that said, there are so many clones of it already it is good to pick something else just for freshness and trying new ideas out ;-)

Excessive gaming is one of the most wasteful things you can do. People calling themselves "gamers" are usually just losers who spend 55% of their time doing basically nothing.
If you have time, go take a look at this game, swarm simulator: https://www.swarmsim.com . This is an incremental game, part of a game genre defined by watching numbers rise. In these kinds of games, you(generally) start with a low rate at which the number amount of whatever you're trying to obtain(meat or larvae in swarm simulator) increase. You can then use some of that thing to buy upgrades to get more of that thing faster, which increases the rate at which you can buy upgrades, which increases the rate at which that thing increases, and so on. This doesn't teach any skill. It doesn't require any effort. It doesn't give any benefit. The enjoyment of it comes solely from watching your numbers get bigger, from watching the amount of things you own and perceived control you have increase; this is the same source of enjoyment in every game in which players progress through levels, raise their statistics, improve/unlock items, rank up in modes, increase a game completion percentage, unlock achievements, etc.
- Incremental Games can get expensive.

Higher order derivatives in everyday life?
Swarm Simulator takes the "starcraft as derivatives" idea and runs with it, out to 30+ levels. https://www.swarmsim.com/#/

What are good games to learn by reading its source code? (javascript, maybe?)
The one game from the top of my head is SwarmSim, but it's a bit old and looks intimidating. I haven't tried cloning it yet.
What are some alternatives?
