KryptEY – Android keyboard for E2EE comms via Signal protocol in any messenger
A significant amount of people will go "huh, Signal will only work when my Netflix VPN is on, I wonder why that is". Signal won't just disappear.
In fact, Signal has a network of volunteers running special proxy services[1] to access Signal from countries with oppressive governments. Signal the company may leave, but Signal the app will try to stay relevant for as long as possible.

Signal Proxy stopped working
I'm using a custom podman container behind my own nginx proxy, so all I needed was to remove the api.directory.signal.org sections from the nginx.conf according to commit 461d2d1aeec601a4d62100949a227f0cef2f6154.
We've updated the proxy itself to remove references to the old domain (see https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-TLS-Proxy/commit/461d2d1aeec601a4d62100949a227f0cef2f6154). If you pull the latest version, that should fix things.
Yes, https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-TLS-Proxy/commit/461d2d1aeec601a4d62100949a227f0cef2f6154 resolved the issue for me (using a custom container). Thanks!

Signal TLS Proxy
It's a bit odd to use a custom docker image, rather than the one maintained by nginx Inc though:
https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-TLS-Proxy/blob/main/ngin...
Vs
https://github.com/nginxinc/docker-nginx
For one, this is 5 versions behind (1.18 vs 1.23).
In general seems caddy or haproxy might be a better fit - but nginx is a perfectly fine choice I suppose.

Signal impersonation risk?
Session's reasoning seems much more... cagey. Telling people to recreate their identities themselves sounds a little like the Threema stopgap solution, but it's much sloppier (I can't imagine end users WANT to recreate their account and communicate this to all their contacts via a third party). They're talking about implementing this eventually, but the ticket for doing so was closed right after saying this.

#IranProtests: Signal is blocked in Iran. You can help people in Iran reconnect to Signal by hosting a proxy server.
Any info on how well the Session messenger would work in Iran?

Help people in Iran reconnect to Signal – a request to our community
I suggest they use Session Private Messenger instead. To judge by the activity in the public "Session" group in the client today, Iranians are not having any trouble with connectivity. That might be because Session uses a decentralized network.
What are some alternatives?
Tox - The future of online communications.
qTox - qTox is a chat, voice, video, and file transfer IM client using the encrypted peer-to-peer Tox protocol.
jami-cli - Jami client for terminal
berty - Berty is a secure peer-to-peer messaging app that works with or without internet access, cellular data or trust in the network
TextSecure - A private messenger for Android.
Signal-Desktop - A private messenger for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Signal-Server - Server supporting the Signal Private Messenger applications on Android, Desktop, and iOS
Speek - Privacy focused messenger that doesn't trust anyone with your identity, your contact list, or your communications
ricochet - Anonymous peer-to-peer instant messaging
naiveproxy - Make a fortune quietly
nginx-proxy-manager - Docker container for managing Nginx proxy hosts with a simple, powerful interface [Moved to: https://github.com/NginxProxyManager/nginx-proxy-manager]
