Self hosting Rocket.chat
I'm considering switching from Matrix / Element to rocket.chat for a small instance (< 10 people) I host for my friends. However there is something during the setup process that gives me pause:
-
Answer honestly: How many of you are gradually moving away from Discord to alternatives and how are you handling it?
Depends on what do you exactly mean, but the obvious answers to this question are either: Revolt, Matrix(for instance, Element, etc.), Guilded, etc. I suppose rocket.chat and Slack could be considered as well.

A few discord alternatives for you to look at
Revolt, Guilded, Element (Matrix Client), Matrix, Cinny (Matrix Client), Spacebar, Rocket Chat, Mikoto, Mattermost, Teamspeak and Nertivia

open-source / 3rd party 1:1 direct messaging integrations for Node.JS
The site is built in Node.JS and front-end HTML (EJS to be exact). I have no clue where to look anymore, tried some open-source stuff like rocket.chat and matrix.org but nothing works the way I want it to. Not sure if it's even possible. The goal is to have customers and owners be able to chat with each other directly through the platform.

Signal: Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames

> We've discussed at length why this is not possible, but if you have more thoughts then please visit the forums. Please try not to open duplicate issues in the future, even if you feel like something is important.
I wonder why this is "not possible"
Signal has documentation on how to reproduce their Play Store builds and compare them with what you've installed locally:

Signal v7.0.0 with phone number privacy
There's nothing on Signal blog as of yet, but Signal's git repository was tagged with v7.0.0 yesterday and we can see from the commit history since the previously tagged version (v6.74.4) that there will be a setting to hide one's phone number [1], as well as disabling the previous default behavior of advertising that one is on Signal to all their contacts already using it [2].

What are you shocked people are still doing nowadays?
Signal works the same but without the user tracking from Meta/Facebook. Many people use it as well but I'm surprised that a majority sticks to WhatsApp.

Fortunately, they did foresee this! The push notification only contains enough information to tell the phone that it should fetch the actual notification content from Signal's servers.
Here's a Signal dev talking about it on the Signal-Android GitHub: https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Android/issues/12961#iss...
And similarly for Signal-iOS: https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-iOS/issues/962#issuecomm...
