Not sure how to Google the answer to this so I’m coming to Reddit! Is there a setting to fix this? I don’t remember it doing this on my 2016 MacBook Pro but is happening on my new 14in MacBook Pro. I would prefer the side of my Mac to act as a wall and not lose content behind it.

there isn't much of an option because mac does not have that feature but there are third-party apps, I am also a windows user so I use this feature constantly, I use Rectangle mainly because its free (https://rectangleapp.com/)2 projects | reddit.com/r/MacOS | 1 Dec 2021
You can also use Rectangle to snap using the keyboard
Shinglify - Tiling window manager within XFCE

This sounds great. I am moving from Mac OS where I got used to using Rectangle to manage windows efficiently via the keyboard. I was a tad surprised when I got to linux and learned that such functionality was available only if you use specific environments and they all require a lot of configuration to become even workable. For some reason I had assumed it would be omni present. I think I somewhat understand why it's not now that I see in at least a superficial way how much variety there is and that it would be difficult for anything to just magically work.

Spectacle is no longer being maintained. I find Rectangle to be a good replacement.
It is a major oversight that apple does not have a master volume control for apps

it should be in macOS itself but rectangle does this really well and is totally free

its Not difficult or complex to have a single config for Mac and Linux. I do, for Debian and Mac. And my experience of Emacs on my Mac has not entailed the problems you describe in the past 5 years. Checkout https://github.com/d12frosted/homebrew-emacs-plus

If not, then emacs-plus is also really nice since it enables you to use Emacs natively compiled which makes it faster.

Spacemacs is a particularly nifty solution to the emacs defaults being... special. There are other bespoke config systems out there, but it really impresses me. The maintainers take performance and, more importantly to me, interface consistency and discoverability seriously. It supports both Vi style bindings as well as the traditional Emacs ones. Combined with a distribution like Emacs Plus with the --with-native-comp it's a very nice way to interact with the system.

I installed emacs-plus using homebrew and afterwards, as you suggested, cloned the spacemacs repo, making sure to switch to the develop branch, prior to launching emacs for the first time.
