Giving access to PDF
In the past, I've used PDFoundry to give access to my players. It's been a while for me, so YMMV.
- Possible character sheet app? [all systems]

Look for a VTT that can do these things (again)
- PDFoundry, which allows you to set form-fillable PDFs as character sheets

Save your D&DBeyond-Books as PDFs
It gives you whatever you've paid for on DDB. So if you only have the PHB, you only get the PHB backed up into Foundry for example. I'm not sure how it maps because I haven't inspected the code lol.

Is a monthly Patreon sub required to make use of some of the functions, including importing material from Dndbeyond, or is this old news?
Based on my current understanding/usage. Here are the two modules: 1. MrPrimates: https://github.com/MrPrimate/ddb-importer Imports characters, spells, items, and the like. Some nice functionality with Dynamic Active Effects included. No sub needed unless you want to 'bulk' import all monsters.

What can Fantasy Grounds do that Foundry cannot?
ddb-importer This one's new. It currently supports importing characters, spells, items, and monsters ($4+ tier Patreons supporters only), but not modules. It allegedly improves on the character importing that vtta-dndbeyond does and supports syncing changes made to Foundry characters back to DNDBeyond.

Is this for me? Another DNDBeyond post.
Foundry doesn't have a wizard-like character generator. It also doesn't have access to all the non-SRD content. That being said, you can import spells from D&D Beyond into a Foundry compendium, and then add them to character sheets. That you'd probably want to use Mr. Primate's DDB Importer, though I've not used it myself.
Foundry is limited to the 5e SRD, but you can import characters and spells from D&D beyond using Mr. Primate's tool. I have used it only for spells.
