What you want to do is have the ability for the user to be able to use the assets from an installation they got. You also don't want to use a name which might make it appear like it is affiliated with Firefly or Stronghold. Look at projects like OpenMW, OpenKeeper, or Julius. They all are reimplementation of game engines, none of them were shutdown.

There's an open source game called Widelands (https://www.widelands.org/) that is very similar in aesthetics to Settlers 2.
Widelands [0] is an attempt to make a similar-ish open-source game.

If you can invest in another computer - it doesn't need to be new - Widelands is a fun Settlers II-inspired RTS which can be played co-op or versus. Wesnoth is a turn-based game which is also great fun multiplayer.
