Octoprint and Octoscreen
It sounds like you only want it to run when you want, not automatically? I am not sure about Octoscreen, I only used that for a while before switching to Octodash ( no particular reason, I think it was the newer plugin when I was reloading the Rpi). I think Octodash asks if you want to run it automatically during the setup , so there is a procedure to run it only when you went. But it was easier to just run it all the time and I think there was a command to stop it when I didn’t want it. May not help, but though I would mention it. And I check and It does say you can choose to start automatically. https://unchartedbull.github.io/OctoDash/index.html. Using this screen HDMI

Can I use a fluidd/mainsail like UI in place of octoprint?
Octoprint has a built-in API server too which is documented here. There are several alternative frontends that use the API. Most popular being probably OctoDash and OctoScreen, and several mobile apps. But also the "Send to printer" button in your slicer uses that API, and of course OctoPrint's UI itself.

trying to get Hyperpixel working with PI4
This guide worked for me pretty well: https://github.com/UnchartedBull/OctoDash/wiki/HyperPixel-4

TouchUI and UICustomizer incompatable?
I've found OctoDash, but haven't been able to get it to work on the install I have right now, might try a fresh one later and see if that works

OctoPrint
I've been using octoprint on my Ender3v2 from a Raspberry Pi 3B and I've never had such an issue in almost a year.
I use Marlin 2.0.1-bugfix branch for firmware because stock creality lacks some useful GCodes (such as for print pausing) but otherwise I did nothing special.
I'm also using OctoDash (https://github.com/UnchartedBull/OctoDash) on the Pi which is mounted onto the printer with the Raspberry Pi 7" touch screen (https://i.imgur.com/p8Mf5Em.jpg) and removed the stock screen.

- Two LibreELEC (https://libreelec.tv/) mediaplayers in house (yes, one is not enough in my big family).
- One for hosting low usage applications at home network (Unifi controller and some more).
- Octoprint (https://octoprint.org) connected to the 3d-printer.
- One on my desk for hardware hacking – mostly as just a PC with GPIO.
- Some Raspberry Pi Zeros as security cameras.

PSA: mjpg-streamer, included with OctoPi, will not work with a Pi camera on 64-bit Linux + workaround
OctoPi, the OctoPrint Pi distribution, uses mjpg-streamer by default and won't work with a Pi camera out of the box if you install a 64-bit OS version.

My Ender 3V2 setup with lots of pictures and descriptions of mods
I use Octoprint to control the printer, do timelapses, create a bed mesh, edit the eeprom, etc. I chose this screen capture so you can see some of the plugins I've added. I love what the ArcWelder plugin does, even if I can't really explain what it does. There's also an ArcWelder plugin for Cura if you don't use Octoprint. And there are a ton more features and plugins to Octoprint than I use. (Mental note to self: update octopi)

Any actually useful uses for Raspberry Pi and alternative sbc?
So I got a Libre AML-S905X-CC (Le Potato) to play around with but all the ideas I see online are about emulating games, running a nas, running ad blocker, vpn server, 3d printer, website hosting. All these just seem like these would be better to run on an actual server or the ideas are lame, basic, and overused. I just want some useful things that only these single board computers can do to justify their purpose. I like stuff like the PiKVM or wireless usb like VirtualHere. The Arduino has their spot for robotics and what not, but what do SBC have to offer besides being small and broad purpose? Stuff like can I make it auto start my car in the morning, attached it to a pcie port on my pc, make a cellular wifi hotspot modem thing, make a smart tv, make a robot with AI, bypass wifi router settings, make a smart door deadbolt or smart window blinds, AI caht bots, transmit landline calls to the internet, drones with facial recognition, spy balloons, kiss under the bicycle racks in walmart, watch the rat movie that cooks food, ratatoot toot, overthrow the government? Those types of ideas are stuff I see as useful but also I want to look up later if those are something that exists already.

Beginner HomeServer Questions
As for alternate rPi projects, I've got one running as an OctoPrint server for my 3D printer, and the other one tracks air traffic near my house.

Displaying Ender-3 V2 Neo thumbnails
If you use OctoPrint, the version just released (1.0.2) of its Slicer Thumbnails plugin supports displaying those thumbnails as well. Upgrade if you use that plugin. Its a great plugin.
