Alternative to the "Google" app (news)?
You can use Read You if you want complete freedom, as long as you're willing to curate RSS subscriptions. Otherwise, Pocket by Firefox browser or Brave news in the Brave browser fit your description, but they do include ads

RSS Reader options
It's a bit of a rabbit hole as there are so many, and none are perfect for my use case. Read You is about as close as I can get, but even that has its flaws.

I use Feedbro on the laptop and Readyou on the android phone. Readyou is posh.
