If you need the vanilla software's features, trying to decide between a server software for a vanilla server is hard, there are many forks claiming to be the best. If you don't need any plugins on your server you can use a Fabric server with server-side optimization mods. The most commonly used vanilla software with plugin support is SpigotMC and its forks, PaperMC, Purpur etc. Another popular vanilla software with plugin support is SpongeVanilla, its primary use is in forge-spigot hybrid servers, in the form of SpongeForge, but it can be used with just vanilla. The SpongeAPI doesn't have as big of a variety of plugins created for it as SpigotMC so you might need to create some of the plugins yourself. There is server software that is designed/optimized for faction/KitPVP or some other types of gamemodes but many are mass-produced and are abandoned quickly.
  • Hi. After a new user joined my server, it keeps crashing. Crash report proved. Help?
    3 projects | | 17 Nov 2021
Use Paper for your server jar, not craftbukkit or spigot. Or if you need even more performance, use Purpur, as it has even more powerful customization options and performance patches; the company I work for as a plugin dev and server admin uses Purpur on our servers. Both of these server jars are fully compatible with Spigot plugins except in extremely rare cases where plugin developers are doing bad things, so there is no reason not to use them.

Be sure to use instead of the default server jar! This fixes a lot of exploits and dupes!
  • Server for minecraft?

If you don't care about performance at all, just host it using a crap desktop in your house and make sure to use A VPS is gonna suck for anything MC wise, they use very slow single core performance cpus. So an older desktop cpu would be better. Otherwise, get a dedi from Hetzner which would be around $40-50. Since your just playing survival, ping doesn't matter really at all so an AX41-NVME would be very powerful for the price. Definitely great for Minecraft.

Use Paper a drop in replacement for Spigot/Vanilla Minecraft or use Lithium for Fabric servers.
    1 project | | 10 Nov 2021
From the evidence they are currently using Multiverse mods on a Paper server (they moved from Spigot when the EN server was added and they upgraded to 1.17.1). Rather than a proxy server solution like Bungeecord or Waterfall.
  • i have an atrenos server we made a sand dupper it is not workiing i allowed the dupplication from the paper file it dont appear in the end
    1 project | | 4 Nov 2021
I don't know why you think you can sand dupe on paper. Paper hardcodes that out, as explained here. the "allow piston dupe" setting is only for TNT, carpet, and rail duping, gravity block duping is unaffected by that setting. You can't sand dupe on paper, even with config changes.
  • End cities dont generate in my server but they do on the same seed in singleplayer. Im using paper 1.17.1 (SEED: 4295486556715776065)
    1 project | | 3 Nov 2021
I run a paper server and have regenerated the end 4 times, with no plugins or special settings, and every single time it's been completely borked. Asking about this in the official discord indicates it's a pretty common issue. There was a confirmed bug in 1.16.3 with end generation (, although it is closed now.

But there is a better solution than Spigot. Enter Paper. Paper is a fork of spigot designed to optimize spigot, and patch bugs and exploits. The official website is and they have a easier download system than spigot does
