Mudlet is a crossplatform (Windows, macOS, Linux) C++ application that embeds Lua - could be a good way to get started with this kind of development in a safe environment and get some experience under your sleeve.

Mudlet uses C++ and Qt, it's a popular project in a niche area: MUD gaming!

I can't help with Fedora repos but there is flatpak support available for testing.

Try out the StickMUD UI via Mudlet client (mudlet.org) from the list of default games.

Try turning off MCCP compression in the Mudlet settings menu as that seems to work for some. You can read more here: https://github.com/Mudlet/Mudlet/issues/3530 and add your experience.

You can download the latest AppImage from mudlet.org, maybe that will work for you.

FLARE: An action RPG with gameplay alike to the games in the Diablo series

Flare is an open source diablo-like action rpg.

I'm a big fan of Flare, and it was a sleeper hit for me because I didn't grow up with games like Diablo. It's open-source, and while it has a pretty short campaign in the vanilla version, it has a lot of fan-made campaigns and mods. It's not the most engaging game I've played, but it's fun to zone out to while listening to podcasts.

Therefore, if a game has to use an off-the-shelf engine, at least make it an open-source engine like FLARE or O3DE. If you're picking libraries, use something permissively licensed, so you don't have to try to negotiate a commercial license to combine something with a copyleft, like recently happened to the remaster of the old Blade Runner point-and-click adventure game. Weird licenses mix together about as well as fish sauce and cake frosting.

This is a favorite. And just to add, after I got a bit tired of roguelikes I tried out Flare and got hooked on the old version in my distro's repos. Later I found it is still under active development and really fun, with a greatly improved base campaign and community mods available as well.

Be sure to get the AppImage rather than whatever might be in older repos if you're running Linux.

It may also be worth browsing the Q&A category of the Discussions page for some more esoteric knowledge.

For example https://flarerpg.org I didnt follow it closer since years so, so cant tell about the current state. The homepage has some recent news entries though.

Why not give Flare-Free/Libre Action Roleplaying Engine a try? Base game is diabloesque but it's easily moddable.
