Modding
Get CKAN if your not familiar with modding. It’s a program that’s a mod repository and automatically puts things where they need to go. Other wise I think most of its on github.

Just finished downloading from Steam... today will be my first time playing the game!!!
If you want to install mods I recommend using the CKAN mod manager. Modding manually is fairly simple if you prefer (just drag mods into GameData folder) but CKAN makes it easier to keep them updated, and it will add any dependencies or track conflicts between mods.

There are countless tutorials on how to install mods online. Otherwise try using CKAN (https://github.com/KSP-CKAN/CKAN/releases), it basically installs mods for you.

Just returned after.. 8 years? I'm now playing this with my 2nd grade son. Is there anything that we absolutely need to do?
Install some visual mods (Parallax, EVE Redux, Planetshine, Distant Object Enhancment etc..) This will lead to a more immersive experience. Download CKAN and the mods from there. https://github.com/KSP-CKAN/CKAN/releases
