  • Is there anyone producing ROM chips?
    1 project | /r/Gameboy | 12 Aug 2022
I can't speak for all flash chips, but some at least have a write pin that isn't needed after programming. The best thing is to find a datasheet for the flash chip you want to use (or is on a cart you have) and check how it works. I've used the 2MB AM29F016 chip on some homebrew flashcarts (made from cheap Yu-Gi-Oh games and an adapter board from https://www.jrodrigo.net/) and that part has an active low write-enable (WE) pin that tells the chip to write if pulled low to ground (0V). If that pin is removed, you can't write to it anymore.
  • Not the best at soldering, but I finally got around to replacing the battery on the Pokemon Crystal I got from ebay. Works like a charm.
    2 projects | /r/Gameboy | 30 Jun 2022
I removed the original ROM chip and soldered a new AM29F016B (2mb) flash chip to a custom tsop flex adapter I then flashed the new chip using BennVenn’s Joey jr but there’s and compatible flashes out there that’ll do the same job. You don’t have to cannibalise a Jap cart as you can order an MBC30 DIY cart Otherwise you can flash the chip prior to soldering it on the board with a different programmer. Lots of options.
