I have also seen Aseprite being recommended. It looks nice and I'm sure it works well, but it is not open source unfortunately. There is an open source alternative called LibreSprite, which seems to mimic Aseprite quite closely.

You should try LibreSprite. It comes with clear (installation instructions) and on the releases page you can download an appimage (you don’t need to compile it yourself). Make sure to install fuse in order to run the appimage, and make it executable.
Audacity telemetry incoming

For example, this happened with Aseprite (the pixel art editor). Now, what happened then (and could happen to Audacity): a fork was made from the last released GPL version, which is called LibreSprite.

It used to be GPLv2, they changed the license, and now there's an open source fork LibreSprite. You can read about the change here.

This is the repo for LibreSprite. Unfortunately their wiki is down at the moment, but there are some build steps in this issue. It's been a while since I last used macOS, but I believe the Xcode command line tools are all you'll need for that.

No, open source Audacity audio editor is not “spyware”
1 project | news.ycombinator.com | 6 Jul 2021
"For what it's worth, I forked Audacity yesterday and removed all telemetry that could potentially spy on users from the codebase. We're currently deciding on a nice rebranded name (as Audacity is trademarked) and are in the process of founding a GitHub organization afterwards. We're also looking for maintainers that could help with Windows and MacOS builds. The repo's link is (for now):" https://github.com/cookiengineer/audacity
