help
There are countless tutorials on how to install mods online. Otherwise try using CKAN (https://github.com/KSP-CKAN/CKAN/releases), it basically installs mods for you.

Does anyone know how to install the outer planets mod in 1.12.3?

Just returned after.. 8 years? I'm now playing this with my 2nd grade son. Is there anything that we absolutely need to do?
Install some visual mods (Parallax, EVE Redux, Planetshine, Distant Object Enhancment etc..) This will lead to a more immersive experience. Download CKAN and the mods from there. https://github.com/KSP-CKAN/CKAN/releases

I give up; I'll venmo someone $10 to install my mods correctly (screenshots included)
Use CKAN, it's essentially a mod hub/browser that manages downloading and installing mods as well, install instructions for each OS are in the link.

I am working on a Linux native Mod Manager.
The best mod manager I have ever used is ckan, consider extending it to cover other games. At the very least take a poke around at how it works and steal some ideas from it.

Time warp mod for newest version?
CKan is a mod downloader. You search the mod and it will install the dependencies automatically (makes modding MUCH easier) Here is a tutorial.

my first playthrough ever. what mods should I consider?
The mod manager of choice for many people is CKAN. Almost every mod you'd want is on there either officially or compiled by someone else. Allows for installing and updating mods, filtering by game version and so on. Also lets you launch KSP straight from the client (which is why my Steam hours count is a couple thousand below where it should be!).

CKAN?
Ah, I thought you already had CKAN. No, it's an external tool. You can get it here, there's also a user guide to get you started.
-
I have some problems with mods
Note: CKAN (Comprehensive Kerbal Archive Network) should handle dependencies for you. They can provide a much better experience when working with mods. Their user guide is here.

Is Z-Levels still going?
I've heard that a lot of large mods need an overhaul to cope with changes in 1.3, but the last change to their public-facing Git repo was about three months ago. Is Z-Levels dead in the water, or is it (hopefully) still going?
What are some alternatives?
