Try downloading from ckan. I had the same error when downoaded this mod from spacedock. I deleted it, then got it from ckan, and it worked perfectly for me.

How heavily do people mod KSP1?
CKAN is what most people use, and it works on Linux (it's basically a package manager). How you install it depends on the distro, but it's all in the link.

Getting mods to work on Epic Games
If these are the first you want to install, go to your Epic library and check the 3 dots, you should see where your game is installed, then give this information to CKAN.

how do i download the unverum for the mods
There’s this link that has a download link at the top that isn’t github. Then as to actually using GitHub if you want to know for future use, I think it should be at the bottom underneath assets generally with the name of whatever you’re downloading rather than the source code files. Here’s a picture I took. Then here’s the GitHub link. Lastly there’s this video which goes through the process really fast

Thinking about making an open source mod manager for Linux?
I've been meaning to look into Unverum. It's open source already, but it's windows-specific. It does work in Linux via Wine, but only barely functions. Was a huge pain to get it running, and it crashes frequently, uses tons of CPU..
What are some alternatives?
RP-0 - Realistic Progression One - Career mode for Realism Overhaul [Moved to: https://github.com/KSP-RO/RP-1]
Nexus-Mod-Manager
Benjee10_MMSEV - Planetside Exploration Vehicle, a mod for Kerbal Space Program implementing a NASA MMSEV-style vehicle.
MCModUpdater
steamtinkerlaunch - Linux wrapper tool for use with the Steam client for custom launch options and 3rd party programs [Moved to: https://github.com/sonic2kk/steamtinkerlaunch]
TweakScale - TweakScale lets you change the size of a part. Check also the https://github.com/net-lisias-ksp/TweakScaleCompanion where support for third-parties is being added!
ModBuddy - Mod buddy is a mod manager created with extensibility in mind
steamtinkerlaunch - Linux wrapper tool for use with the Steam client for custom launch options and 3rd party programs
ModuleManager - ModuleManager is a mod that let you write patches that edit other parts at load time.
NetKAN - Metadata files used by the NetKAN/CKAN indexer for KSP
