I use Jeeaaasus - youtube-dl in Docker, which is working great for me. I have enabled the web UI which enables me to add channels easily. And refreshes all videos every couple of hours. Also you can use all the command line options available in yt-dlp.

Best way to add yt-dlp?
Extremely easy to get it running, though I haven't tried automating. The Youtube-DL container template in the community apps store uses ytp-dl. Here is the repo https://github.com/Jeeaaasus/youtube-dl and the container hub page https://hub.docker.com/r/jeeaaasustest/youtube-dl/

A server - client downloader idea
That probably depends on what you want to download. I use https://github.com/Jeeaaasus/youtube-dl for youtube videos, the ui sucks but it does the job. I wouldn't use a browser extension due to privacy reasons
