Valheim Dedicated Server Auto Update
I'd recommend you use docker container for whole shebang. I use https://github.com/mbround18/valheim-docker and it's quite nice. There seems to be some support for autoupdate but I've been doing it manually for now.

Tbf, if you have a linux server running the docker image is really straight forward.

Trouble hosting server
I'm attempting to host a server using the mbround18/valheim-docker container, which I have been able to get up and running successfully, the log output from the container shows that the Valheim server should be up and running, using port 2456.
That said, did you create his prescribed docker-compose.yml (edited with your server name, world, password, variable your prefer, etc) in your home directory and run it from there? He outlines it in his getting started page. I goofed a couple times in setting things up and had to restart. Did you try fully starting over? Is your user in the docker group? Make sure the above-mentioned compose file is in /home/[your-username] and then run:

Valheim - 0.145.6 Patch Notes
There's a few of them out there - I'm using mbround18/docker on Docker Hub - lets you set user and group IDs and does auto-backups and auto-updates (now configurable with time). Check his GitHub for the project as the readme on Docker Hub seems to be a touch out of date.
