Stars - the number of stars that a project has on GitHub. Growth - month over month growth in stars.
Activity is a relative number indicating how actively a project is being developed. Recent commits have higher weight than older ones.
For example, an activity of 9.0 indicates that a project is amongst the top 10% of the most actively developed projects that we are tracking.

General thoughts on Habitica's UX
There is also a great Pomodoro Chrome extension that has a timer feature. You might try (politely) opening a request on GitHub for a stopwatch feature, as it seems like it isn't too different from a timer: https://github.com/ofekmiz/Habitica-Pomodoro-SiteKeeper/issues. However the dev seems quite busy, and it might not match up with what they want to do with this add-on so I wouldn't count on them adding it in any time soon.

Suggestions for logging miles on running shoes
Are you more interested in tracking the depreciation of the shoes, or your running habits? If it's the latter I'd point you to projects like qs_ledger.
