I recommend modding the 3DS. Only because it adds so much features that the 3DS doesn't have now. On top of that, backing up the ROMs for your cartridges is great for long trips where you really don't want to bring every game you own, or just when you can't be bothered.

You can homebrew your 3DS, it's surprisingly easy.

You can kind of with NTRView. It sends your "New" 3DS gameplay to your Wii U's screen.

You can stream your 3ds through the gamepad and tv with ntrview. There is some input lag but a game like that wouldn't matter too much, and the sound only comes out of the 3ds. https://github.com/yawut/ntrview-wiiu

Set up NTRView on your Wii U, then install BootNTR via Universal Updater on your 3DS, launch 3.6, then open Rosalina Menu and start InputRedirection. Open NTRView on your Wii U and put in your 3DS' IP, displayed on the bottom screen.

I do wish we can use the Wii U Gamepad on the Switch. I've been using it to play 3DS games through ntrview-wiiu and it's pretty comfy for longer play sessions. Prop the 3DS on a phone stand though since the streaming quality is mediocre, I'm only using it for controls.

This method requires you to first install CFW, then use Nanquitas' custom 3GX Loader Edition of the Luma3DS boot.firm to allow you to run BootNTRSelector, which you can then view with Snickerstream (or NTRView if you own a Wii U). This particular method (via NTR) only works on New models, but there is an alternate (and now deprecated/unsupported) method for Old models.

You need to run NTR-CFW on the 3DS (use BootNTRSelector, but note that it doesn't work with current Luma3DS, so you may need to install a different version to use it). You should also enable InputRedirection in Rosalina (opened by pressing L+Down+Select--InputRedirection is under "Miscellaneous options..."), which will allow you to control the 3DS with the Wii U GamePad. Then, start ntrview-wiiu on the Wii U and enter your 3DS's IP address, which you can find in Rosalina.
