Use the resources provided to you to ensure you step through each section with assistance. Don't feel as if you're all alone doing it. Help is available.

And is it already updated to 11.17? As detailed in https://3ds.hacks.guide , means for installing CFW on an "old" unit updated to 11.17 are limited at present time.

Installing CFW as per https://3ds.hacks.guide and then using Checkpoint is the most straightforward way, as others have suggested.

First you have to make sure you have a modded 3ds with a theme loader (Anemone, Themely). I made this theme using the Usagirei Theme Editor. After that, export the theme and put the files it gives you into a folder. Put that folder in the “Themes” folder on your SD card and it should show up in your theme loader. If you have any other questions I would recommend looking up a better tutorial. They can probably explain it better than I could.
