Not only Unity...

I would say to Unity developers, don't use Godot.
For 3D games, check out the engine: Stride Engine or Flax Engine.

Alternative Game Engines for Marooned Unity Developers
Flax Engine: C# and C++, Global Illumination system, Visual scripting, Full Source Code Available, 4% royalties after $250,000 (threshold is per quarter, not all time). The engine honestly looks really good, so it could be worth taking a closer look, but does lack tutorials.

Unity Face Mass Protest After CEO Purchases Malware Company, Lays Off Hundreds, & Calls Devs Idiots
Flax (4% royalty after 100k revenue) looks to be the most Unity-like, and seems to be pretty polished, if also new and lacking features. That's all I know about it so far. Its pricing model is similar to Unreal's and, like Unreal, it's source-available (but not truly open-source).

[PC Gamer] Unity is merging with a company who made a malware installer
I'm in the same boat. Only thing I've found so far that's even remotely close is Flax Engine.

Unity Employees "Mad and Stressed Out" Amidst Unexpected Layoffs
I'm not advocating anyone switch to it for a serious production but I've been following Flax for a while:https://flaxengine.com/

What engine/framework would be the best in my case?
FlaxEngine - I know I know, you mentioned 2D games, but if you ever wanna try out a 3D engine Flax is awesome.

Old Windows CD-ROM games on Linux?
If all goes well, try to run the game when it's done. You can also install GemRB (the opensource engine for Infinity games) if you want, it might have extra features.
There's an open source engine for Baldur's Gate II

Custom packages without forking entire void-packages repo?
Recently I was unable to update my system packages (xbps-install -Su) because my custom-built GemRB package was causing some Python problems. Hence why I would have to rebuild packages from time to time. Maybe it would be better to say two parallel sources of packages rather than two package systems.

[Humble] RPG Legends Baldur's Gate & Beyond | $1 Planescape Torment, Icewind Dale | $10 Baldur's Gate (Enhanced Edition, Siege of Dragonspear, Faces of Good and Evil ), Baldur's Gate II (Enhanced Edition), Neverwinter Nights: Complete Adventures | $20 Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous
Icewind Dale 2 has never been given a facelift due as source code has been lost. The best solution is to purchase Icewind Dale 2 on GOG and then play it using GemRB.
Lastly if you still have the original copy of the game I can highly recommend checking out GemRB. GemRB is an open source engine for the Infinity Engine games (Baldur's Gate series, Planescape Torment and Icewind Dale series) similar to projects like OpenMW (for Morrowind), CorsixTH (Theme Hospital), OpenRCT2 (Rollercoaster Tycoon 2) and OpenXCom etc.
