https://openlibrary.org/volunteer is the general page but I'm assuming you want the technical stuff so https://github.com/internetarchive/openlibrary/blob/master/C...

I'm a very active volunteer and can always use the help of folks that have tech experience already. We get lots of student volunteers that require a lot of work to shepherd. As such, issues tend to be claimed pretty fast but also medium sized ones don't always get through the finish line.

Anyway, if you're seriously willing to commit some time you can tag me on their slack/github (@raybb). I'm currently doing a lot of performance related work (primarily migrating their codebase to fastapi) and I could use help but don't always open issues for it because sometimes guiding a non-experienced person is more work than just doing it.

There's also quite some design work going on to move things into the modern age and more reliable. One small thing that comes to mind is getting rid of jquery where it's used casually (not where a library depends on it). We have a few files like that.

Happy to chat more with anyone who is seriously willing to spend time to tackle medium sized issues with a few rounds of feedback!

I was actually trying to determine the best free source of metadata for books. I was hoping for something like MusicBrainz.

The best I could find seemed to be https://openlibrary.org. There is https://isbndb.com, but it is paid.

Thanks for letting me know. The link is working for me even in a private window. Not sure why that's happening. As an alternative you can visit https://github.com/internetarchive/openlibrary/pulls and put the search as "is:pr author:RayBB is:merged"

OpenLibrary has a pretty solid API that I've been using for a bit now. It returns metadata as well as over images.

I'd like to make a pitch for Openlibrary.org the free online library from Internet Archive that includes a fulltext search of millions of books.

I've been volunteering with them on and off for several years and it's always a lovely experience. Their backend is python and frontend mostly from python templates and some Vue for librarian stuff.

Every Tuesday they have a call on Zoom that everyone is welcome to join to share what they're working on, ask for help, and generally chat a bit. It's a great time.

Depending on what you're interested in there's a lot to do from helping build import pipelines for more book entries, writing bots to cleanup data, Performance improvements, better documenting public APIs, etc

I'm currently slowly working on a wikidata integration for their authors page. We also could use some help upgrading to Vue 3, mentors for Google summer of code would be helpful, find of ML projects needing help, moving away from old jQuery libraries, etc.

They can be quite responsive to PRs too like I blogged about here: https://blog.rayberger.org/idea-to-merged-in-less-than-30-mi...

For example, here's a small issue that could use some help on the python side: https://github.com/internetarchive/openlibrary/issues/8928

OpenLibrary does provide search access to full texts. For example: https://openlibrary.org/search/inside?q=%22institutional+thi...

It is open source and they're always looking for contributors. I think they'd especially welcome help improving search!
