Conversations [1] is the best Android XMPP client I know. IIRC they pushed the adoption of OMEMO and implemented it first, before the desktop clients could catch up.

Maybe have a look at Briar or good old Jabber (XMPP) with OTR or OMEMO, e.g. implemented in Conversations.

Beware of using Whatsapp to send messages with people inside Iran. Signal, Element or Session have higher security.
XMPP messengers (e.g. yaxim are distributed along lots of servers, so there's one entity who can decrypt your data. However, encryption takes a few extra steps (unlike Signal, which is automatic). Most people don't use XMPP apps, so it won't serve to contact most people.
