Anyone else getting the "Failed - Virus detected" message when downloading heightmaps from heightmap.skydark.pl?
I have used heightmap.skydark.pl in the past and have successfully downloaded stuff from it, but now it gives me that warning whenever I try to download anything.

Freeways? Pshhh.. Bless Your Heart and Get Outta Town..
I used SkyDark to get the roads overlay and the Overlay mod to bring the image in-game to trace the roads. I also use Google Earth when looking at specific locations, because OSM (the platform Skydark uses to gather road maps and height maps) sometimes will route paths/roads that donβt actually exist.

Doesn't work anymore . Use this instead https://heightmap.skydark.pl/

Was gonna recreate my hometown but I've changed my mind..
It already exists! It imports roads from OpenStreeMap. Combine it with a heightmap from heightmap.skydark.p to get the terrain. But the result is pretty janky and you need to go through and fix a lot. You can see a video demonstration by Justin Nobbs

Custom Map Making - Water
However I am stuck at the map making side of things because of Water levels. Where I live is basically flat terrain except for where the number of rivers creeks and ponds (natural and man made) are however when importing a hight map into Cities Skylines via Skydark nothing really changes and if I match the sea level to the beaches hardly anything else gets filled in with water and if i try and manually add the water sources I always get loads of flooding. Ive tried fiddling with the settings to the Water Depth and Base Level around but nothing seems to change.

Real world city sizes - how they fit in 81 tiles and why 81 tile size is important.
I've used heightmap.skydark.pl to demonstrate the building of real cities in CS1, and how that will change if CS2 has a smaller buildable area.

Maps that look like flushing NYC?
Here is a link to my go to map editor. It also has some street importing functionality. Might need to read up on exactly how it works. Itβs been a while.

Mods for map making
You can also try working with a heightmap of a real world location using https://heightmap.skydark.pl/ Set the water depth to 60 if you want shellfish/tuna. Check the max height in your selected area doesn't exceed the max height in game (1024m) including ocean depth. Use the height scale to bring it down, you may want to do this anyways if you like more flat areas. Then download the image file and import into the map editor. You may need to repeat this process a few times to get it right. It will need a lot of smoothing but can quickly produce much of the landscape. Then set your water level, put in forests and resources, highways and other networks.

There is a GitHub Action that keeps the blog posts list updated, but the reference in the tool is outdated. I already sent a Pull Request with the necessary change, but you can copy it from my repository and adjust it as needed.
