Cerberus VS caniemail

Let’s start with one of the features that was most requested in my previous posts: Keila now has a WYSIWYG block editor! – Screenshots With the new editor comes a new base template which is based on Cerberus Hybrid and which looks great on pretty much all email clients, even tricky ones like Windows Mail.

Not a framework but I’ve found Ted Goad’ Cerberus templates very useful.

I customized them, extracted them into modules and created a design system which I then translated to an email CMS.

Coverage is pretty good although Outlook still glitches in some circumstances.

FWIW caniemail is unreliable and does not have full coverage.

Also with this level of complexity I’d rather start with a few tested patterns than navigate the insane labyrinth of email client inconsistencies.

Keila currently comes with one template. It’s based on the wonderful Cerberus Fluid Template and looks great on mobile! Future versions will of course let you modify the template to your heart’s content.

Another client to test for is Google Mail, which can be done with a Gmail.com account. And Apple Mail, on any Apple device. Apple Mail provides the best email rendering so you don't even really need to worry about it much if you're covering the other two. But these three make up the main ones you should test for. And for checking compatibility of specific code, caniemail.com is an essential tool to use.

Be careful when using CSS, some properties like flex ⚠️ are not supported by all email clients. You can check this website to see which properties are supported by which email clients. Another solution is to use a CSS framework that will do the hard compatibility work for you. I use MJML, in my in-depth article about SES, I explain how to use it to create responsive emails.

Why is it happening ? Every email client has different compatibilities with html and css. An awesome website to visualize that is caniemail. It is the email counterpart of can-i-use and has information on every compatibility issues regarding emails. On caniemail, you can see that flex-direction: column isn't supported on gmail desktop, but is on macOS mail: everything becomes a little clearer!. Furthermore, looking at the global ranking, everything on macOS usually works well, while it isn't the case on windows and web-native counterparts. Let's figure out a solution!

www.caniemail.com has saved me the few times I've had to work on HTML email projects. Though to be honest you could just assume nothing from the 21st century works in Outlook and be 90% right
