Using Plex for audiobooks

Martha Wells, A.G. Riddle, and More Audiobooks from Recorded Books
Also I noticed Audiobook.bundle is no longer being actively worked on and has been moved to a different project, Audnexus. If you want to try it, I would use Audnexus because it has a release in March.

I am ruined by Amazon’s evil and will never get my money or my property back.
If you don't know about Plex, it's a service where you set up your own media server. It's not designed with Audiobooks in mind but I created a Music Library and only put Audiobooks in it. Plex is great and for regular media it will scan all your files and organize it and all the the details, summaries, catalogue and everything as if it were a regular streaming services; but since it's not designed for audiobooks you need to add an audiobook source for it to pull details from. I added Audnexus as my source, it works great.

My audiobooks collection. I saw a similar post from another user and I thought about sharing mine.
Normally, if a book is divided in too many mp3 files, I convert it (combine) to M4B so it's only 1 or 2 files. Then I use a plugin called Audnexus to update the metadata in Plex.

Plex for Books?
There's extra steps that need to be taken, but there are automation tools that work well in conjunction with readarr that take care of those steps. Auto-m4b monitors a folder for audiobooks and converts mp3 files into chapterized m4b files, which readarr handles way better at import than mp3. The Audnexus metadata agent handles proper metadata for audiobooks, including author info and portraits plus plex-friendly covers.

Libation 9
I much prefer Plex rather than use Audiobookshelf mainly for the convenience of having everything in one place. You can use Audnexus as a metadata scraper. The only thing it might not pull (at least on Chronicle) is the Narrator data, since I had to input all that manually for Prologue. Other than that, it’s a perfect setup.

Is there an Audiobook solution for Plex using Android?
Others use Audnexus plugin for Plex.
-
mp3tag x audible scraper no longer works?
Could you use the AudNexus plugin for Plex instead? If the book files are properly titles, it should grab the Audible info for them and add that to Plex. In the end, that's all the matters, right?

Anecdotally, my experience has been pretty good when using the third-partyAudnexus agent and using this guide to add local metadata tags.

Best Windows app for combining multiple MP3s into single M4B
Look into m4btool (https://github.com/sandreas/m4b-tool). Audiobookbinder increases the m4b filesize. Followed this post for my own purposes: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/426094/convert-multiple-mp3-files-or-single-m4a-into-m4b-with-ffmpeg-and-afconvert

Selfhosted MP3/FLAC Tag editor
I use MusicBrainz Picard in a docker container and can access over web to edit mp3 and flac. But if you use it for audiobooks you should use https://github.com/sandreas/m4b-tool

Advice on Complex Audiobook
However, I only went through the trouble because I didn't want audio quality to be affected at all (nothing to be encoded again, only removed). If you are not too concerned about audio quality, there is definitely programs out there on Mac that can chapterize files. M4btool is pretty powerful and there is Audiobook converter. I've heard AudioBookBinder might work as well, though I think it is older at this point.
- Does Plex support m4b audiobooks? I have been searching and results say yes, but Plex cannot find any of my books that are m4b only the ones which are mp3

- LG G5 H850 (optional with Bang & Olufsen Hifi-Plus module) + Audiobookshelf + Substreamer
Let me cite my comment from https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32042780:
I use m4b-tool[1], tone[2] and audiobookshelf[3] together with an LG G5 H850 smartphone[8] with Bang & Olufsen Hifi-Plus Module for Audio Only and I am pretty happy with this config. For Music I use Navidrome[5] and Substreamer App[7]. Maybe I'll try out Jellyfin[4] or maybe Plex[6], but I really don't wanna go closed source.
I also thought about writing something self hosted in C# to have ONE solution for audiobooks, podcasts and music and started a small private project, but this will take a while until it is ready to release something...
You may ask: Why an LG G5 H850? Well, its relatively small and cheap (about 50 - 80 bucks used) it has an audio Jack, USB-C, you can change the battery, it can hold up to 2TB microSD storage, has an HiFi Plus module for audio enthusiasts and a descent screen. Besides that it can run lineage os...
Note: I'm the author of the first two projects :-)
